how safe are bunkie boards in bunk beds?

I bought some bunk beds for my kids this weekend. I did not realize that the bottom of the top bunk had no wooden support. He had something called a Bunkie board. I removed the bed and found a metal wire that is suppose to stop my crush on another boy. Are they safe Bunkie boards?
